Stepping into the Past: S4 & S5 Chinese History Experiential Learning Day

Today, our S4 and S5 Chinese History students stepped outside the classroom to immerse themselves directly in history!

To mark the 160th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s birth, our S4 students visited the Sun Yat-sen Museum and followed in his historic footsteps across Hong Kong, gaining a deeper understanding of the crucial role Hong Kong played in nurturing his early revolutionary ideas. Following the museum visit, students took part in a movable type printing workshop. Under the expert guidance of Master Yam, they learned about the rich history and development of Hong Kong‘s traditional printing industry. To round off the day, every student got to try their hand at movable type printing, experiencing handling the metal type and printing with fresh ink—a truly rewarding experience!

Under the guidance of the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, our S5 students visited Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden in Diamond Hill. Chi Lin Nunnery incorporates traditional Tang Dynasty mortise-and-tenon wooden joinery, built entirely without a single nail or iron fastener. Through guided tours of the halls, students gained insight into the complex’s symmetric central-axis layout. Nan Lian Garden, modeled after the Jiangshouju Garden of the Tang Dynasty in Shanxi, employs the borrowed-scenery technique to create an idyllic oasis, delivering an immersive sensory experience of sight and fragrance. This field trip deepened students‘ understanding of Tang architectural design and traditional Chinese garden culture, laying a solid foundation for their future studies in religious history.
