Distinguished lecture

The History and Chinese History departments jointly hosted a distinguished lecture today. We were truly honoured to have Mr. Suen Tak-wing, former Curator of the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, deliver a talk entitled "Learning Through Adversity: My Journey in Museums and Kowloon City", in which he shared his career in the cultural and museum sectors. The event drew an enthusiastic response, with over a hundred students in attendance.

Mr Suen began by speaking candidly about his flustration during secondary school, reflecting sincerely on his early struggles with disengagement and a sense that what he was learning was "irrelevant to his future". He was eventually inspired by archaeology and museum work. He also shared touching stories from the final chapter of his career before retirement—personal anecdotes that inspired students to reflect on life's deeper lessons and their own future paths. In the segment focused on Kowloon City, Mr Suen adopted the perspective of an archaeologist, guiding the audience through significant archaeological discoveries in Hong Kong.

By weaving together his personal journey and local history, the lecture not only broadened students' understanding of the past but also deeply moved both teachers and students with his unwavering commitment to learning and self-actualization.
